FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS

Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
is the most common structural analysis tool in use today for the design of complex structures. STX Canada/US Marine (STXM) offers professional structural analysis using FEA, allowing an optimized, cost-effective design to be achieved quickly and economically.

Applications of FEA T STXM include:

  • Linear static analysis (stress & deformation)
  • Non-linear analysis
    • Material non-linearity
    • Boundary non-linearity
    • Large displacement
  • Thermal expansion analysis
  • Modal analysis (natural frequencies)

STXM uses NeiNastran FEA software from NEi Software, together with Femap for Pre & post-processing.

FEA may be used in all design phases, from concept design to detail function design, where problems are difficult to solve by classical methods. A FEA analysis report, covering all aspects of the analysis, can be issued on the request of the client and/or submitted to Class Society for approval.

STXM employs several staff members with FEA knowledge including vendor training. Combined we offer more than 40 years of FEA experience. With the advanced FEA software packages available to STXM, global or/and local models can be created quickly. STXM also has an extensive suite of in-house programs developed using FEMAP API programming capability. These programs are not only to automate and speed up construction, loading (such as apply CFD loads to models) and reporting, but also to carry out further assessments such as buckling and  “hot-spot fatigue”.

Examples of projects where STXM has used FEA include

Longitudinal strength assessment, racking assessment, and detail analysis of  256m cruise ship

  • Structural analysis and design verification of a double-hull shuttle tanker
  • Global longitudinal strength and global hull vibration analysis of an 85m offshore patrol vessel
  • Global hull strength analysis of a multi-hull offshore construction vessel
  • Global strength analysis and design verification of a modular lighterage system
  • Design and strength/deflection analysis of podded propulsor foundations
  • Design of equipment foundations, including offshore crane pedestals, anchor handing winches, and A-frames
  • Design of power barge exhaust towers, including assessment of design changes and equipment replacement plans
